This is a standalone product, intended for owners who already have a hardtop and want a new trim panel to go with it. If you are buying a hardtop from us, this panel is included.
A hardtop installation is not complete without this trim panel, also referred to as the “clamp panel” in the Tesla parts catalog. In addition to covering up the mounting brackets and unsightly forward section of the hardtop, it is intended to provide additional clamping force against the windshield frame. Without this, the hardtop is only “pinned” to the windshield frame in two spots along the forward edge. While this may be fine, there have been several stories among Lotus owners about their hardtops flying off on the road as well as the track. All it takes is for one pin to come loose and the wind does the rest. Think of the clamp panel as an insurance policy. By itself, it probably won’t hold the top on at highway speeds. But it’s a nice backup to have in case something goes wrong with one of the two forward mounting pins. Plus the clear carbon version looks pretty nice.
The OEM Tesla panel was a flimsy piece of plastic backed with foam and wrapped in black headliner material. If Tesla can find one today, it retails for $344. Ours is a cored carbon fiber panel with no foam backing. This means that it weighs less while being extremely rigid. We also offer two versions – “OEM replica” with black headliner for $250, or clear carbon (satin or gloss) for $300. If opting for the clear gloss version, please consider reflections and glare inside the cabin. This panel mounts up directly above your line of sight out the windshield. The clear gloss version is our favorite, but we understand that some owners have had issues with glare coming from gloss interior trim pieces.
